Pilgrim in an unholy land? Spy in need of a safe house? Phillies fan in Manhattan? We've got you covered if you're heading to New York City during the World Series and want to cheer on the Phils in relative peace, thanks to these Big Apple bars that are Philly friendly.
Shorty's, Hell's Kitchen (also Clinton and Midtown West)
Shorty's is self-described as "NYC's Only Authentic Cheesesteak," and considering the place was formerly a Tony Luke's (changed the name; kept the menu), we'll take them at their word. We hope we're right, because all they have on the menu is cheesesteaks and beer.
Five TVs line the slim bar, with a small sitting area and juke box. They'll be showing the Phillies games as well as Eagles games, so City of Brotherly Love transplants and tourists can watch.
Getting there: If you're taking the bus to the Big Apple, you'll be entering via the Port Authority, located at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Head west toward 9th Avenue and you're golden.
Eat it: Though no specials have been announced for the games as of yet, their "Shorty Special" runs Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. and 11 p.m. to close, and includes a shorty cheesesteak and pint of beer for $8.
576 Ninth Avenue (41st and 42nd streets), 212-967-3055
Wogie's Restaurant (West Village)
Pronounced the same way you say "hoagies," expect an all-Phillies crowd for the World Series, with four HD TVs broadcasting the game. The bar is somewhat small, but there are seven booths and outdoor seating as well.
At all times pints of Yuengling and Bud Light are just $3, but get there early for your spot. One reviewer at Yelp.com said some folks get there as early as two hours before gametime for a seat.
Getting there: If you're coming in from New Jersey, take the PATH train to 9th Street (and bring a map). If you're already in the city and using the subway, take the 1, 2, 3, F, V or L to 14th Street/7th Avenue (and bring a map).
Eat it: They're known for their cheesesteaks (naturally) and wings, but we think Adrian's Atomic Avalanche (a steak with American cheese, pepperoni, hot peppers and fried mozzarella balls, topped with marinara) sounds worth its weight in antacids.
36 Greenwich Avenue (Charles and Perry streets), 212-229-2171
Town Tavern (West Village)
The Town Tavern is about as Philly as it gets. They'll be providing a safe haven for Philadelphia fans throughout the playoffs, they play the "Fly Eagles Fly" fight song when the Birds score, and offer complimentary shots after a victory. (Utley Bombs for the Phils, DeSean Bombs for the Eagles.)
The restaurant also features a ton of space, with plenty of booths on two levels, as well as high-top and low-top tables and seating at the bar, and 14 HD TVs throughout the joint. A DJ plays tunes during commercial breaks.
Getting there: Take the 6 to Bleecker if you're up for a bit of a walk, or the B, D, S, V, A, C or E train to W. 4th Street.
Eat it: Their most popular dish is the half-pound burger, which comes with a challenge. Stop in during the day on weekends from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., finish the burger (with fries) and a beer for $10, and you get a free beer.
134 W. 3rd Street (6th Avenue and MacDougal Street), 212-253-6955
Blondie's Sports (Upper West)
This huge bar and restaurant on the Upper West Side has more than 60 TVs including two big-screens, but even though there's plenty of room to sit, they recommend calling ahead and reserving a table on game day.
The bartender we spoke with said, "We welcome all fans," which makes us think you'll be in with Phillies fans, but there will probably be a large contingent of Yankees fans as well. She did mention they usually try and keep fans of the same team at tables near each other.
Getting there: Take the 1 train up town to 79th Street and you're there.
Eat it: That same bartender on duty recommended the wings, of which she said, "Oh, definitely. That's what we're known for -- they're awesome."
212 W. 79th Street (Columbus and Amsterdam avenues), 212-362-4360
Ship of Fools (Upper East)
Here we have another "we welcome all fans here" place that will give Philly fans their spots at the bar. The bartender we spoke with said, "Our regulars are really nice." (We just wonder if that means nice, or New York nice.)
Regardless, 50 TVs hang so you can't turn in any direction without seeing a game. Free shots are given out when your team scores, but that's usually reserved for football. Baseball? Well, they've yet to decide on that.
Getting there: Take the local 6 train to 77th Street or take the express 4 or 5 train to 86th Street. If you take the 6, walk two avenues east to 2nd Avenue and turn left, heading north four-and-a-half blocks. If you take the 4/5, walk two avenues east to 2nd Avenue and turn right, heading three-and-a-half blocks south.
Eat it: It's all about the wings at Ship of Fools, and if we get one of those really long World Series games that goes deep into the night, rest assured their kitchen is open until 4 a.m.
1590 2nd Avenue (82nd and 83rd streets), 212-570-2651
