Top 5 performances of 2008

1. Wilco, Aug. 10, The Grand Sound is desperately important at a Wilco concert, as each member of the band seems to scuplt notes out of the discord that their instruments can produce. It's hard to imagine them ever sounding better than on the stage at the Grand. And looking at Jeff Tweedy's face, it seemed he was thinking the same thing. -- Matt

2. David Byrne, Dec. 3, The Grand The former Talking Heads frontman did not disappoint the sell-out crowd that Saturday night. Complete with three singers, three dancers and two drum kits, Byrne and his crew put on a show every bit as theatrically stirring as musically exhilarating. - Rob

3. Old '97s, July 31, Bottle & Cork A relatively small crowd for a great band at the end of July in Dewey Beach? Talk about a concert-goer's, mid-summer night's dream come true. The boys from Texas put on what will go down in this reporter's mind as the best beach show of the summer. - Rob

4. Patton Oswalt, Sept. 27, The Grand Having just watched the Phillies clinch the NL East hours before, we were already in a good mood. Patton wasn't though, suffering from a bad cold, which he said felt like, "I have the 18th century in my lungs. I'm coughing up soot and orphans." - Rob

5. Avett Brothers, July 10, Bottle & Cork The bearded and vested trio strumming their upright bass, guitar and banjo looked like they were ready for a Civil War reenactment. But they fit nicely on the stage at the Bottle & Cork, where a sweaty and packed house enjoyed some of the best bluegrass around. - Rob
