Greek Festival
Where: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 North Broom Street, Wilmington
When: 11 a.m.-11 p.m., June 2-5
How much: Free to get in, food is $3-$14, alcohol is $4-$6
Festivities: The biggest draw for the Greek Festival is the food. Particularly the tiny little deep fried balls of dough coated with honey called loukomades.
During lunch time, the inside of the church is open and serving Greek specialities like Moussaka (an eggplant casserole with ground beef and bechamel sauce), pastitiso (a kind of Greek lasagna, with bechamel sauce and ground beef) and the ever popular layers of filo dough, cheese and spinach known as spanikopita. If you want to go for lunch, there is a shuttle that runs from 9th and Market Streets to the festival and back from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
If you want those loukomades though, along with other tasty dishes like gyros, souvlaki and some ouzo to wash it down with, plan to get there after 4:30 p.m., which is when the outside stands that serve that food open.
Non-food related events include some booths set up by local artisans, and two performances nightly by the Terpsichorean Dancers of Holy Trinity. The first performance is at 7:30 p.m. and the second is at 8:30 p.m.
