Separation Day
Where: Old New Castle
Time: Starts at 11 a.m., fireworks at 9:30 p.m., June 13
How much: Free
Festivities: July 4 is the day we became a nation, but Delaware's story started a little earlier than than.
On June 15, 1776, the colonial assembly that was meeting in the Old State House in New Castle determined that the colony of Delaware was separate and independent from Great Britain. So before we can celebrate the country's birthday on July 4, we have to celebrate our state's birthday -- which is exactly what they do in New Castle, on the second Saturday in June.
They kick things off with a parade at 11 a.m. featuring various marching bands and the Mummers own Avalon String band. There will be arts and crafts all day long, a performance by the Steve Ketter Acoustic Trio at 1:30 p.m. and a magic show at 3 p.m., among other events. The biggest draw is the fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
