To cap off Election Week, The Voice revealed its first voting results of the season on Thursday night.
All four teams performed this week, so all 20 singers were up for elimination. America's votes chose two people per team to advance. Then, each coach made the always-agonizing decision to save only one more of his or her own. That meant two per team -- eight in total -- were sent packing.
There were some songs, and some dramatic eliminations:
Team Adam Levine and Team Blake Shelton proved they are much stronger singing alone than in groups with their combined performance of Kelly Clarkson's Stronger.
The first elimination went down on Team Adam. America voted coach and crowd favorites Amanda Brown and Bryan Keith through. That left Joselyn Rivera, Melanie Martinez and Loren Allred. After explaining why he liked each singer and taking deep breaths, Adam said, "I'm going to choose Melanie." He told her, "You're so incredibly unique and different and I love that about you."
Then, Adam had to recover quickly -- and change from a sweater to a blue T -- to perform Daylight with his band Maroon 5.
The next song came from Season 2 Voice champ Jermaine Paul. He premiered his new club jam I Believe in This Life. Appropriate for fans of David Guetta, I'd say.
Team Blake was next up to hear results. Terry McDermott and Cassadee Pope earned the most votes. That left Julio Cesar Castillo, Liz Davis and Michaela Paige. "I think any one of the three of y'all could go on to win this thing," said Blake, stalling before picking the final member of his team to move on. "I gotta go with my heart and emotion. I gotta pick Michaela," he said.
Next, Team Christina and Team CeeLo combined forces for Train's Driveby. Of note: Diego Val's lyrics flub, De'borah's disco moves, Dez Duron's attractiveness and Nicholas David's voice (it's fantastic).
And it was results time for Team Christina. Voted through: Dez Duron and Sylvia Yacoub. Christina could save De'borah, Adriana Louise or Devyn DeLoera. After saying inspiring things about how her students should "take this opportunity from here and look beyond the show," she made a shocking save. "I don't think this particular person had an opportunity to display what they have," she said. She saved Adriana, who walked off the stage yelling, "Oh my God!"
Team CeeLo remained. America voted deep-voiced singers Trevin Hunte and Nicholas David to the next round. MacKenzie Bourg, Diego Val and Cody Belew were up for elimination. "You soldiers of fortune take these pieces of silver and gold and re-invest in yourself," said CeeLo, getting poetic. "I'm gonna pick on the grounds of most improved," he said. CeeLo saved Cody Belew.
Next Monday (8 ET/PT) it's back to performances.
