It's easy to get the sense that there's also a spirit of doting affability in Caribbean food, upheld by the friendly and warm island people, who seem somehow more inclined to treasure their guests' happiness than their own. The only discernible potential for disappointment in this modest-but-spotless little restaurant is unpredictability -- not all menu items are available each day, a shortcoming that in some ways adds to the allure. On any given afternoon, fortune may bring a new surprise -- maybe some nicely breaded and fried "Escovitch fish," (pronounced "ess-koe-veetch") a pepper-centric, just-tart Jamaican classic renowned for its unapologetic fire and bright flavors. Or some pholourie, deep-fried balls of split-pea flour and a chutney dipping sauce. Or some oxtail or turkey wing stew; or a hot-pocket-like beef patty; or a beef and cabbage that gives the Irish true tropical competition.
